Indigenous Shamanic Energy Healing

Writer's picture: Monique WilsonMonique Wilson

Hello, I'm Monique Wilson, and you may notice a traditional name alongside mine, Monique Karhiio Wilson, on Facebook. This name, deeply rooted in my Mohawk heritage, symbolizes my connection to my ancestors and the land. I reside in Maple Ridge, BC, where my roots extend to the Mohawk and Cree peoples, along with French, Irish, and possibly British lineage.

Despite the mysteries surrounding our European ancestors, my birthplace in Vancouver, on Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh territories, and my current home on Kwantlen territory, reminds me daily of the profound respect and gratitude I owe to these lands and their peoples.

Over the years, I've had the honour of forming a deep bond with an elder from the Kwantlen Nation, a relationship that has enriched my life and grounded me in the wisdom and practices of Indigenous healing. This connection has allowed me to explore and embrace my role as a healer, guided by traditional techniques passed down through generations and contemporary practices that resonate with the spirit of healing across cultures.

As an Indigenous healer, my journey has been one of continuous learning and practice. From my early days working on a Rape Crisis Line to delving into the realms of energetic healing, massage, aromatherapy, and shamanic practices, my approach has evolved to encompass a broad spectrum of healing modalities. My commitment to understanding the human psyche and its resilience led me to study clinical hypnosis, integrative hypnosis, and the science of trauma, particularly somatic experiencing. These studies have not only deepened my knowledge but have reinforced my belief in the malleability of the mind and our capacity to heal from trauma.

My practice is an amalgamation of ancient wisdom and modern science, aiming to support individuals on their healing journeys. Whether through one-on-one sessions or the women's circle I host, my goal is to offer a space for healing, learning, and growth.

The recent times have brought their own challenges, not least of which is the stark reminder of the disparities in our world. The news of the world's wealthiest individuals amassing even greater fortunes while many are left with less has stirred deep emotions within me, from sadness to anger. These feelings, however, also serve as a catalyst for reflection and action. They remind me of the importance of making space for our emotions, allowing ourselves to feel deeply and to find constructive ways to process these feelings.

In moments of overwhelming emotion, I turn to techniques like the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and simple yet powerful breathing practices that help regulate the nervous system. These practices, along with the support of the community and a commitment to sharing and caring, are vital components of my approach to healing and living.

As we navigate the complexities of our world, I am reminded of the importance of compassion, understanding, and action. My work is a testament to the belief that healing is not only about addressing individual pains but also about recognizing and responding to the collective challenges we face.
